Casement Sound Prep
Overview:
The process for prepping sound casement windows.
Definitions:
Procedure:
Primary Sash
- Tape the sash with regular 3/8” glazing tape.
-
Apply weather stripping to the sash.
- On the snubber side of the sash, the weather stripping will be facing in.
- On the other three sides, the weather stripping will be facing out.
- The corners of the weather stripping need to be cut at 45 degree to fit nicely into the frame.
- Check the sash label for the size of the unit and its correct orientation (HL or HR).
- Use the “Sound Window Snubber Placement” chart, to determine how many snubbers need to be installed and the placement of each.
-
Measure where the snubbers go.
- Lightly mark with a pencil.
-
Line the sash snubber jig up with the pencil marks and drill 1/16” pilot holes.
- When drilling, be sure to not puncture more than one vinyl leg.
- Install the snubbers with 8A X 3/8” PHIL PH screws.
-
Install a bracket and track on the sill.
- Place the pivot sound window jig on the corner of the vinyl where the head/sill and side rail with the snubbers meet.
- Drill four 1/16” pilot holes for the casement track and bracket into the vinyl, on the head and sill.
-
Install the brackets and tracks.
- Use 8X 5/8” PFH screws for the tracks.
- Use 8 X ¾” PFH screws for the brackets.
- The brackets are L/R specific.
- Rotate the sash so the rail without the snubbers is facing up.
-
Place the keeper jig on the corner of the vinyl where the sill and side rail without the snubbers meet.
- The jig is L/R specific.
- Make sure the jig is pressed up into the vinyl leg.
-
Drill four 1/16” pilot holes into the side rail.
- When drilling, be sure to not puncture more than one vinyl leg.
- Drill the two common holes at the bottom and the second two in either the 21”, 33”, 41”, or 47” section. Whatever section the sash’s height most closely rounds down to.
-
Install the keepers with 8 X 5/8” PFH screws.
- Install the bottom screw on the keeper closest to the sill on a slight angle.
- Tape the secondary sash with 3/8” glazing tape.
- Apply the correct AAMA label and ID label to the frame.
-
On the head and sill, place two 12” SDL strips onto the outer cavity of the frame.
- For HL place the strips on the left.
- For HR place the strips on the right.
- Use the “Sound Window Snubber Placement” chart, to determine how many snubbers need to be installed and the placement of each.
-
Measure where the snubbers go.
- Lightly mark with a pencil
-
Line the frame snubber jig up with the pencil marks and drill 1/16” pilot holes.
- When drilling, be sure to not puncture more than one vinyl leg.
- Install the snubbers with 8 X 3/8” PHIL PH screws.
- With 8 X 5/8” PFH screws, install two hinges onto of the 12” SDL strips.
- Oriente the hinges so the triangle created by them (when open) points towards the right of the frame on HL or towards the left of the frame on HR.
-
Insert the operator into the operator cutout.
- The operator is L/R specific.
- Install the operator retainer with two 8-32 X 5/8” flat bottom screws over the operator.
- Attach the operator to the frame with six 8 X ¾” wide thread screws.
- With two 8 X ¾” screws attach two clear riser blocks to the frame’s sill.
- Attach the first riser block down, 4” from the side rail. Attach the second riser block up, halfway between the first riser block and the hinge/SDL strip.
- Insert the lock into the lock cutout.
- Attach the lock to the frame with the lock retainer and 8-32 X 5/8” flat bottom screws.
- Insert the second knob in the tie-bar into the lock.
-
Clip the tie bar guides onto the tie-bar ends.
- Clip the bottom tie-bar guide (the guide closest to the lock) 1” from the bottom knob.
- Clip the top tie-bar guide ½” from the top knob.
- Attach the tie-bar guides to the frame using two 8 X 1 ¼” screws on each tie-bar guide.
- Ensure the tie-bar is not hitting the tie bar guides while operating the lock.
- Disconnect the arms of the hinges with a chisel.
- Apply a bead of silicone to a 7” X ½” piece of scrap nail fin.
- Attach the scrap nail fin to the head and sill of the primary sash just up from the bracket.
- With the secondary hinge jig, drill two 1/16” pilot holes into the sash.
- With four 8 X ¾” PFH screws attach the arms of the hinges to the sash.
- Reinsert and reattach the bracket arms into the bracket track.
- Snap the knob on the end of the operator arm into the casement track.
- Attach the crank arm to the sash bracket and close the casement.
- Engage the lock to secure the sash into the frame.
- Open and close the window again to ensure its working properly.
