SDL (Simulated Divided Lite) Process

SDL (Simulated Divided Lite) Process
Process:
Overview of process
Definitions:
Any needed definitions
Procedure:
  1. Check the label for the window the SDL will be applied to. Verify the size, color, and type of SDL required (FSDL, SDL3125, SDL225).
  2. Use the paperwork to locate the invoice number for the window. Locate the slot indicated on the paperwork. Pull out all the SDLs in the slot. Verify they match the required size, color, and type of SDL.
  3. Lay down the window on the first table so that the inside of the window will be facing up. Clean the glass using anhydro solvent. Lay out the SDLs over the shadow bars to ensure that the correct bars are used in each position. Use the correct gap gauge (0.016” for all colors but black and 0.032” for black) to measure sizes.
  4. Starting with the bars that run from one side of the vinyl to the other, use the same gap at each end and mark the piece with a pencil for the correct size to be cut. Use the chop saw to cut the piece to length, being careful not to cut it too short. Recheck the size to ensure proper fit. Recut if necessary. The ends for painted or capped material will need to be painted to match the color required.
  5. With the piece of SDL laid out on the glass, pick out a guide bar close to the needed size. Set the guide so that one end is against the vinyl of the window and the other against the edge of the SDL. Check both sides and adjust it until both sides are the same size.
  6. Start to peel off one end of the SDL backing. Be sure to keep the correct gap between the end of the SDL and the vinyl. Stick the SDL to the glass at one end using the guide bar for proper placement. Keeping the guide bar tight against the SDL, continue to pull the tape and stick the SDL to the glass as you slowly move the guide bar to the other end of the glass. When you reach the end, ensure that you have the proper gap at each end by testing with the gap gauge.
  7. Repeat steps 4 through 6 for all pieces of SDL that run from one end of the window vinyl to the other.
  8. All pieces of FSDL that terminate at another piece of SDL will need to be cut at a 45° angle. This step will be skipped if using another type of SDL or if no pieces terminate against another SDL. Using the miter saw set at 45° cut each piece at one end with the top of the SDL being bigger than the tape side. Be careful not to cut off more than 1/8” of material.
  9. Using the correct gap gauge, measure and mark each piece so that it will have the correct gap at each end. Cut each piece with the straight saw or at 45° as needed.
  10. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for each piece cut in step 9.
  11. Use the roller to apply 15 pounds of pressure to each SDL to ensure proper adhesion.
  12. Slide the window to the second table so that the outside of the window will be facing up. Clean the glass with anhydro solvent.
  13. Repeat steps 3 through 11 for each piece on the outside of the window, ensuring that each piece lines up with the corresponding piece on the inside.
  14. Move the completed window to the completed rack and scan the barcode to DNCUS.
  15. Send completed racks to delivery or wrap as needed.
